Founded on April 16, 1984, by Fr. Sebastian Vazhakala, M.C., in the presence and full participation of Mother Teresa of Kolkata, M.C., The Lay Missionaries of Charity (LMC) is an International Association of Lay People, both married and single, who adhere to the Spirit and Charism of the M.C. Family. The Lay Missionaries of Charity are one of the six branches of the M.C. Tree and includes over 3,000 professed members in 51 countries around the world.
The Lay M.C.s meet the first Saturday of every month at St. Thomas More to study the teachings and charism of Fr. Sebastian, M.C. and St. Teresa of Kolkata, followed by prayer, adoration, and Mass. The apostolate of the Pittsburgh group currently centers around caring for the poorest of the poor in those who are, or have been, incarcerated.
