October has traditionally been dedicated to the Blessed Mother under the title of Our Lady of the Rosary. In his apostolic letter, Rosarium Virginis Mariae, St. John Paul II writes, “By its nature the recitation of the Rosary calls for a quiet rhythm and a lingering pace, helping the individual to meditate on the mysteries of the Lord's life as seen through the eyes of her who was closest to the Lord. In this way the unfathomable riches of these mysteries are disclosed.” Perhaps throughout the course of this month, we can pray the rosary for our ourselves and those in need. Our Lady desires to lead us closer to her son, and the rosary is a wonderful devotion to help us do so. May our Lady, the Queen of Peace and the Queen of the Rosary assist us in reflecting upon God’s love for us.
Respect Life Month: October is also designated as Respect Life Month. As Catholics we believe that all human life is sacred from conception until natural death. That is why the Church has opposed measures to limit this view; including abortion, euthanasia, the death penalty, In vitro fertilization, contraception, and anything that diminishes God’s plan for creation and the human family. Let us pray as a Church that we can see the human dignity that God has given to every person.
St. John Capistran Feast Day: The Feast of St. John Capistran occurs each year on October 23rd. St. John Capistran (1385-1456) was born near Naples, Italy and studied both civil and canon law. He was a well-respected lawyer and was married, but lost his wife during a time of warfare while he was imprisoned. He resolved in prison to serve God, and after his release, sold all his property to join the Franciscans. He became an eloquent preacher and missionary in foreign affairs and fought against heresies of his time. To celebrate his Feast Day, we will have a reception on Saturday, October 19th and a Donut Sunday on Sunday, October 20th in the newly renovated Capistran Hall. St. John Capistran, pray for us!
