The Gospel passage today reminds us that we have nothing to fear because God is our Father and Protector. He is a Father who knows us and who loves us completely. Through the loving sacrifice of His Son, He has redeemed us. Through the Gift of the Holy Spirit, He guides us and strengthens us for the work of discipleship. We are so precious to the Lord that He has counted every hair on or head. We are His chosen ones.
Reopening our Churches on this day, we are reminded that we still trust in God in all things, but also love each other enough to be patient and understanding as we try to keep everyone safe and secure. We will eventually get back to some semblance of normal, but we will do it in small steps. We are not afraid, but we are and must be careful as we go through these difficult times. We, like Our Heavenly Father, protect and assist each other.
As I think about my father this day, I remember him as the strong, quiet type, a man of few words, but a man of profound actions. He fiercely loved his God and his family. He was devoted in his prayer and in his service. He worked very hard to provide for his family. He and my mother were married 53 years and were inseparable. Though they would never think of themselves as theologians, they truly were. From them and their example of unconditional love, I now recognize that they were a reflection of God for me. They protected me, inspired me and so many times saved me from my own mistakes. They were such a gift and blessing to me that I knew God truly loved me and I could walk in faith rather than fear.
The Gospel today reminds me how great our Father in Heaven truly is and how He blesses us each day in ways both small and great. So, I wish all of our dads a very Happy Father’s Day. We are all thankful for the example of Jesus you are to us each day. You are a blessing we will always cherish. I also give thanks to our loving and provident God for placing you in our lives.
