Lectionary Study Group meets on Tuesdays from 9:45am - 11:00am in the Capistran Hall Parish Library at St. John Capistran Church. This study is a great way of increasing our knowledge of Scripture and at the same time learning from one another in the group through sharing. That creates great fellowship among the members of the group. Please join us!
You are welcome to join in at any time. If you have questions regarding the sessions please contact Geoffrey Schnieder at: [email protected]
If you plan to join us, please contact Tom Anderson at: [email protected]
For the Fall 2022 season, you are invited to join your fellow parishioners in a relaxed, interactive atmosphere as we “break open” the Sunday Lectionary:
Tuesday Mornings, starting September 20, 2022
9:45am to 11:00am
in Capistran Hall/Library (SJC)
During each session we explore and discuss all the readings proclaimed in the Sunday Liturgy. Our hope is to deepen our understanding of the Sacred Scriptures and thereby lead us to a fuller participation in the Eucharist.
“At Home with the Word” is our study guide, available through Liturgy Training Publications: https://ltp.org/products/details/AHW22/at-home-with-the-word-2022 The current 2022 edition is on sale for $4.50.

For our Lent/Easter 2022 study, we discussed Dining in the Kingdom of God – the Origins of the Eucharist in the Gospel of Luke by Fr. Eugene LaVerdiere, SSS.
Fr. LaVerdiere was a highly respected New Testament scholar. The author of many books, he taught at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago and Mundelein Seminary. The book is most appropriate this season: our Sunday Lectionary centers on the Gospel of Luke, the U.S. bishops are currently working on a statement on the Eucharist and one of the foci of the Vatican’s Synod is to reflect on what it truly means to be in communion.
“With this book you will come to a deeper understanding of the eucharist in the Gospel of Luke, a story of meals and journeys. It highlights the unique Lukan tradition of noon meals, Sabbath dinners, banquets and even of meeting and dining with a stranger on the road to Emmaus. Join the trip; sit at the table; dine in the Kingdom.” – Liturgy Training Publications
